Explain to your children that you get out of life according to the quality of your input. It is silly to expect a pleasant fun filled life if you made no or little effort to invest the time and energy needed. Show your child how you make coffee. Show him/her that there is no steaming cup of coffee produced if you forgot to put some coffee beans in the percolator. Explain that it is important to invest the energy and time if you want to do well at school or live in a clean room. It is key to explain that not everything in life that needs to be done is pleasant and fun. Some of the stuff that we are expected to do are tiring and time consuming. Take for example the necessity of preparation for a test or the cleaning of the yard while your friends are busy playing games on their computers. A short term view might seem unfair, but could in the long-term turn out to be very rewarding.

Teach your children that they create the “weather conditions” in their life with every choice they make. A less acceptable attitude and poor choices or procrastination always lead to chaos, “poor weather” unacceptable outcomes. Children must be taught about the value of discipline. Discipline must not be enforced in a “military style” manner. Your son or daughter must understand the value of dedication. The edge can be taken off your training when your child understands that you are guiding them for their own benefit. The rewards achieved when their dedication and commitment produce quality outcomes will go a long way to make their effort seem worthwhile. Teach your child that a job is not done before the tools used are back where they were found. Ask your child to look around them and they will see that their heroes on the sport field or in the movies did not achieve what they did by chance. They also had to work hard when their friends were at parties or burned the midnight oil playing video games. It is an illusion to think that we can enjoy all the good things in life without paying the price in full.

Parents teach your children that they have two options. The one is to sulk and moan while they try to get out of the task at hand. The other is to do what needs to be done with a good healthy attitude. Your children’s future earning potential and ability to compete in life depend on the principles I am sharing with you today. It is imperative that you make sure that your son or daughter understands that you are not teaching them about responsibility to spoil their fun or punish them. You can make this a fun filled experience or create a rebel that will fight you all the way. The example that you show in your own activities will go a long way to show your children that you don’t just talk a good game. Use examples to explain how individuals that applied these principles reaped impressive rewards later. There are living examples around you that you can use. There are also good examples on TV or in magazines that you can use to illustrate the benefits of dedication and persistence. Be gentle and firm while to teach your child. Avoid becoming a fault finder. Notice even the small things that your child does that confirm the benefits of focus and dedication.
