Interview with Barbara Berger by Tim Ray - The Awakening Human Being

An interview with Barbara Berger that a Danish Psychology Magazine would not publish.

A Danish magazine that calls itself “Psychology” recently contacted Barbara and wanted to interview her for one of their regular features in the magazine entitled “Me and my health”. It’s a regular page where the magazine asks a well-known person about their relationship to health and health issues. Barbara agreed to be interviewed and answered the magazine’s questions. To our great surprise, the magazine refused to publish the interview with Barbara because she would not specifically talk about what she actually eats and what kind of exercise she prefers, but rather spoke about how our thoughts and mental attitudes influence our health.

Here in Copenhagen at BeamTeam Books, we found it rather surprising (to say the least) that a magazine which calls itself “Psychology” (and not “Fitness”) and which professes to distribute information about psychology and mental health would not publish what Barbara has to say about the matter, after inviting her to share her thoughts.

The definition of psychology is (according to Wikipedia): “The study of behavior and mind, embracing all aspects of conscious and unconscious experience as well as thought.”

Here is the full interview that the Danish Psychology magazine wouldn’t print:

“First the mind, then the body

What is health to you? (Is it a high priority for you? When do you think we’re too health-obsessed? etc.)

In the late 70s and early 80s, my former husband and I had one of the first health centers in Copenhagen – on Gothersgade right across from Kongens Have. We had a health food store and sold only organic food, taught cooking classes, and gave private consultations to people who wanted to feel better or heal themselves by changing their diet. So I spent many years of my life working with food and diet, I even wrote a book called “Eat Brown Rice and Make Revolution”. After 10+ years of working intensely with food and diet, I started to realize that other factors besides diet and exercise were involved when it comes to good health. When I worked with people with the same diagnosis, I saw over and over again that some people healed themselves through diet while others did not. So I began to ask myself, what other factors are involved in living a healthy, happy life besides diet and exercise? That was when I discovered the power of the mind and realized that our mental attitudes and psychological condition are, in fact, far more important than diet and exercise when it comes to health and happiness. Since then, I’ve written many books describing the mechanism of mind and how our thinking influences our well-being.

When are you most healthy and when are you most unhealthy?

My definition of health is when we are living in harmony with who we truly are. So it’s a mental/psychological state – not a physical state. In my latest book “Find and Follow Your Inner Compass”, I explore how we can live more in harmony with who we truly are and with our deepest dreams, desires and passions. When we live in harmony with ourselves, the physical body reflects this and we experience more ease and flow in our physical bodies.

What do you think the relationship between our health and our psychological state is?

As I said above, first the mind then the body. The body reflects the mind.

What do you eat? (Are there certain foods that you eat a lot of? Are there things that you never or very rarely eat?)

Our mental diet is always far more important than our physical diet. And by our mental diet I mean, what are the thoughts we are entertaining in our minds on a regular basis? Are we thinking thoughts of gratitude and love or do we have a tendency to complain and criticize a lot? This is the most important diet of all because our mental attitude influences how the cells in our body operate – as the latest research into the mind-body connection has proven.

So when it comes to the actual foods I eat, as far as I’m concerned the real question is – am I eating so-called healthy foods out of fear or am I eating healthy foods out of love and appreciation for my body and for life itself?

What kind of physical exercise do you do? (How do you feel about exercise? Is there a particular type of exercise that you especially like to do? How often do you do it? Etc.)

Mental training is far more important than physical training and much more difficult. All of my books are about how to train your mind and focus your attention on the good that you seek so you attract and experience more and more of what you love and enjoy into your life. So I am constantly working on this, every day.

How do you deal with stress?

As I write in my new book about the Inner Compass, stress arises when we are out of alignment with who we truly are. So the important question here is – what is it about our way of thinking and living that is not in harmony with our true self? So to tackle stress before it really becomes problematic requires that we become more conscious and learn to follow our inner compass instead of constantly being tossed around by the opinions and expectations of other people.

Barbara Berger is the author of 15 self-help books published in 30 languages, including the bestsellers “The Road to Power / Fast Food for the Soul” and “Are You Happy Now?” Her new book “Find and Follow Your Inner Compass” will be released at the end of 2016. She lives in Copenhagen where she also has her coaching practice. For more, see”
