A change of your “Thinking environment” will benefit you greatly.

17 Feb

Today’s world is fast-paced, challenging, and stressful. It’s understandable that people can lose focus and concentration easily, especially people that have a lot of work to do each day; work that requires a lot of focus. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, and you shouldn’t beat yourself over it.

However, you should do something to try to improve your concentration.

Firstly, you’ll need to get rid of stress because stress is a major issue that plagues almost everyone in the world. You can meditate, work out, do something creative that isn’t constrained by time, or similar activities. But when it comes to concentration and focus, you’ll need to do something else.

Here are the top 7 natural ways to help you increase your focus and concentration!

Have brain-healthy foods

The brain is an amazing organ. It controls every other organ, it’s responsible for our thoughts, and many other things. However, if you don’t give your brain enough energy, it won’t work as efficiently as it should.

Providing your body with brain-healthy foods will have an impact on brain performance. The best foods you can eat are vegetables, berries, cold-water fatty fish, nuts, rosemary, dark chocolate, turmeric, coconut oil… Basically, anything that is completely natural and not artificial will have a positive impact on your brain and improve your concentration and brain efficiency. Also, consider dieting. Create a diet of only brain-healthy foods without sugars and with only a small amount of fat.

Watch other people concentrating

A great way to learn about concentration and how you can improve your own is to visit a movie theater and in the middle of the movie, look around and notice how everyone is concentrated on what’s happening on the screen. Something really big would need to happen to break their concentration. You might notice that they breathe slower and more shallow. Some people may be squeezing their hands. All of these signs are great for you because you will learn how other people concentrate and, most likely, you’ll be able to improve your concentration.

Use your hands as blinkers

This is quite an interesting phenomenon. There’s this thing called the Pavlovian trigger. Pavlov used to ring the bell and then feed the dog. He would repeat this process until the dog associated the bell with food. The way this is useful to you is because, once you teach your body to associate, in this case, using your hands as blinkers with the need to have better concentration, it will work like this for a long time. So, next time you have a test or you need to focus on the task at hand, put your hands to the side of your eyes and create ‘tunnel vision’. This will cause you to have an increase in concentration.

Learn techniques to increase and control your energy

There are specific techniques that you can learn that will enable you to control your energy as well as increase it. One of these techniques is ParamhansaYogananda’s Energization Exercise. Once you learn this, you’ll have the ability to concentrate on a deeper level.

Unplug and chill out

Once you reach a certain point where everything you do is wrong or too difficult, it’s time to chill out and relax. Even though multitasking sounds like a great idea and an ability that is helpful, the truth is very different.

Multitasking lowers your concentration and focus because there are so many things you’re doing at once. It’s important that you give yourself some time to rest and to complete the tasks you have correctly. Focus on only one thing and when you finish it, switch to another one. It’s much more efficient than multitasking.

While meditating watch your breath

When I first started meditating, I made the mistake of trying to control my breath. This is bad because you’re unnecessarily forcing yourself to do something that happens by itself. Simply focus on your breathing but don’t control it in any way; simply observe. As time goes by, you’ll notice your breathing slow down along with the mind. Both your mind and your body will feel recharged and ready to continue working. Remember: Don’t control your breath; let it happen naturally!

MindTrip MagazineSee as if for the first time or the last time

The next time your mind wanders far away from where you are, take a look around you. Notice the small details that you constantly seem to ignore. Look at something that you know is there, but as if you’re looking at it for the first time. Let your mind focus on objects and people around you. This change of ‘environment’ will benefit you greatly, and you’ll be able to focus much more easily in the future.
