Religion / Spirituality should not be about “getting closer to God” (or The Universe or The Great Mystery or the Quantum Field or whatever our favourite label is).
How is it possible to get closer to something that we already are ? How is it possible for a wave to “get closer” to the ocean ?
We already are that which we seek to become “close to”. The notion of “getting closer” implies a distance and this creates separation where it doesn’t exist; paradoxically taking us in the opposite direction to that which we profess to be going.
There is no separation to begin with. We create it with our beliefs, ideologies and superstitions; with our thinking and with our mind; with our speech and with the manner in which we live our life.
Unfortunately (and quite ironically) most religions promote, endorse and encourage the split between ourselves and “God”. This perceived separation appears through dogma and attachment to discriminatory beliefs and in its extreme form progresses into fundamentalism, which ultimately manifests as fear, anger, hatred, violence and war.
It would be useful for all of us, religious and non-religious, spiritual and non-spiritual, scientific and non-scientific, to re-look at our most cherished beliefs and ideas; with an open mind in order to see what the consequences of these are in our life and in our world as a whole.
It would be useful to make religion / spirituality a practical endeavour instead of a set of intellectual ideas, metaphysical notions, esoteric theories and egotistical attachments.
It would be useful for all of us to come up with fresh, new aspirations for our lives; with a view of our own health and happiness as well as the health and happiness of all other beings sharing this planet and the planet itself; and with a view of the health and happiness of generations to come.
Good Morning Steve,
I think you said more in this short post than most so-called authors of spiritual/religious literature say in an entire book. Funny I told Anna this morning while we were having breakfast that the biggest tragedy that ever happened was when clever or possibly ignorant individuals convinced man that God is somewhere up there …. while they the miserable sinners are stuck on this tiny rock in the corner of universe. This move put man in mental/spiritual bondage up to this day. We are forever reaching out trying our hearts out to gain back the favour of God. This started with the myth (fall of man) that claimed that two people (Adam and Eve) ate from some stupid fruit and with this single act tumbled mankind into an everlasting process of misery, death, pain and destruction.
Read more of the wonderful work (like above) by my dear friend and author of this post.
